Photographing Fireworks

A fireworks display can make a beautiful backdrop for a portrait, or even serve as a photograph’s subject on its own. However, as you may have noticed, taking high quality pictures of fireworks can be much trickier than it looks. If you have been frustrated by dim, blurry, or faded photographs of fireworks, you are definitely not alone. We hope the following tips help you avoid these problems in the future.

Have you taken a photograph that turned out even better than you hoped? Share it with the world! At YourCanvasPhotos, we can convert your favorite pictures into attractive, framed canvas photos. Simply contact us to learn about our creative display techniques.

Tips for Fireworks Photography

With patience and some planning, fireworks can make a wonderful subject for your photographs. A few tips that can increase your chances of great results are:

  • Invest in a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, if you do not already have one. This is type of camera that allows you to view your subject as it will appear in the finished photograph. With an older model, the image you see through the viewfinder may differ somewhat from what you are actually photographing. SLR cameras can be manual or digital.
  • Use a slower shutter speed. If your camera has a “bulb” setting, this will allow you to keep the shutter open for as long as you are holding it down. Since fireworks take a few seconds to explode and reach their full beauty, you will want to keep the shutter open through this process.
  • Turn your flash off. If there is residual smoke from the fireworks, the flash will likely catch it, making it stand out more than the beautiful display in the sky. Additionally, a flash will not help you capture more of the fireworks display, so there is no reason to use it.

Of course, even if your photographs do end up with some fading or other blemishes, there may still be hope. At YourCanvasPhotos, we can use innovative touch-up techniques to repair your photographs before mounting them on our handmade wooden frames.
