Changing Depth of Field with Hyperfocal Distance

The depth of field for a lens is a narrow plane where everything in that plane is it in focus. Since the loss of focus outside the depth of field is gradual, you may not notice the change until an object is completely blurry. Sometimes, though, you may want everything to be in focus, not just the area in the depth of field. Then, you should know how to manipulate your hyperfocal distance.

Playing with the hyperfocal distance on your camera can be especially helpful if you are wanting to take landscape pictures. This is because all objects, both near and far, are in focus, not just the narrow area of the depth of field.

There are two ways to set the focus distance. First, if you set your camera to infinity, all objects from the lens' hyperfocal distance to infinity will be in focus. Secondly, should you set the device to hyperfocal, all objects from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity will be in focus. For example, a camera set to hyperfocal with a hyperfocal distance of 10 feet will have all things from 5 feet away until infinity in focus.

Additionally, two things can change your camera's hyperfocal abilities. Obviously, a lens' focal length plays a critical role in playing with hyperfocal capabilities. Wide-angle lenses typically have a much closer hyperfocal distance than telephoto lenses. Also, changing the aperture can change the hyperfocal distance as well. Small apertures contribute to shorter hyperfocal distances, while larger ones create a distance that is further away.
