Creating a Homemade Backdrop

When participating in amateur portrait photography, having a professional-looking backdrop for your pictures can be a huge step towards creating wonderful, priceless images. You have probably seen the sheet-like backgrounds provided at professional photography studios, and these really are not that difficult to create for yourself. Here is some advice for creating a homemade backdrop for your home studio.

Choose the Right Size. If you are taking close-in head shots of one person, you probably do not need a large background. However, for sitting portraits of multiple people, you will obviously need a wider and taller backdrop.

Build a Frame. Once you determine the size of the backdrop you want, you can use a material such as PVC pipe to create a lightweight frame over which you hang your sheet. Another good framing material is wood because you can staple gun your sheet to the wood itself, rather than worrying about draping. You probably want a square or rectangular frame on which to hang your drop.

Pick a Material. For the backdrop itself, you will probably want to use a large piece of material. A good backdrop material is muslin. Sometimes, you can even use a bed sheet. With all of the types of material out there, you get to choose both your texture and your color. Consider your subject?you will probably not want to pick a fire-engine red material. Also, intense patterns can draw attention away from your subject. Remember, you can dye your material as well rather than purchasing a pre-dyed fabric.

Hang Your Backdrop. After choosing the right color and pattern for your cloth, drape it over your frame. As mentioned previously, you can staple gun it to a wooden frame, or lay it over a PVC frame. Also, you may choose to use pins or some other item to wrap the fabric over the top of the frame. You probably do not want to pull it completely taut, as that can cause unwanted reflections. Sometimes, a little bit of wrinkle or draping is actually a good idea to give your portrait a softer, more natural look.

After building your homemade backdrop and taking your perfect portrait, it is worth displaying your picture as a work of art. To give your image an interesting, high-quality appearance, consider having it turned into a canvas photo rather than printing it on computer paper.
