Counteracting the Red-Eye Effect

The eyes are very important for conveying emotion and enhancing facial expressions, which is why most people notice others' eyes upon their first meetings. Thus, when the dreaded red-eye effect shows up in photos, it can be annoying as well as distracting from the beauty of your image.

You have probably taken or been subject to a picture that contained red-eye. Instead of the pupil of the eye showing up as the black circle, it instead glows with an unearthly red light. This occurs most often with flash photography when it is dark around the person or people that you are photographing.

How Does Red-Eye Happen?

Typically, the pupil contracts in the presence of bright light. However, the flash in photography happens too quickly for the pupil to adjust. Instead, the bright light from the flash goes through the pupil and reflects off the back of the eye, called the fundus. Because the back of the eye contains a large amount of blood vessels, it reflects back through the pupil as a bright red glow.

Ways to Decrease Red-Eye

Thankfully, many digital cameras now come with a special red-eye setting that emits a series of flashes before the main flash occurs and the picture is taken. These pre-flashes give the pupil a chance to contract so that it does not reflect red. You can change your camera to this setting if you are going to be taking lots of flash photos.

Additionally, you can utilize bounce lighting so that the strobe of the flash is not directly aimed at someone's pupils. This still brightens up the image while not causing red-eye. If you can, take pictures in an area well-lit with ambient light in order to naturally contract the pupil.
